All I really want to build is the head. I can look at the schematics available all over the web and determine values but not brands.

I could build it if I knew what brands to use. Brands matter in this type of thing, if I built it from radio shack parts I am sure it would not sound very good. That is assuming radio shack still caried electronic parts.

Last time I checked they specialize in radio control dionsaurs. I know I could prob buy one similar for less. Anyone know if there is a parts list available that provides the proper values and reccomended brands? Lets try and stay on topic? Re: Fender Champ Parts list If you go to the Weber web site, you can download an excel file that is a detailed parts list of all of their kits. In addition to that, you can download the schematic that they use for the kit.

That is all the info you need If you are building a champ and are looking for a parts list, then I assume this is your first tube amp project??? If it is your first tube amp project, step-by-step instructions as well as safety tips are a must. Re: Fender Champ Parts list If you really want to get into amp building head over to the guitar amp forum on Ampage.

I have repaired several McIntosh amps and built a few low wattage audio amps. Thanks for looking out. Let me know if you build one. Re: Fender Champ Parts list Thanks Got it.There is no thrill like plugging in a guitar and playing through an amplifier that you put together yourself.

You are building a piece to be passed on and with upkeep can be played and passed on for generations to come. It could be science project, or just something you do out in the garage. You just get more out of it, and you get to understand the signal process a little bit. I am taking my knowledge, from all the hours I have spent tracking down the best cost options and sharing that work with you.

I am also pointing you to a few resources along the way. This report is not to be taken as building instructionsas working with high voltage discharge capacitors can be lethal and I do not want to own that liability.

I am showing you exactly the best places to purchase your materials, and how to get the most out of your dollar. Please note that shipping charges may vary depending on your location. The cost given are what was priced to me living in the Midwest USA. Please pay particular attention to the Grounding Loop of the circuit and make sure the amp is grounded properly. The capacitors still hold a charge. Wait 25 to 30 minutes for the capacitor charge to bleed off before sticking your hands, soldering iron, or screwdriver in there.

You can get many of these parts and incomplete kits on eBay, however why pay the middleman? This is a great amplifier for the price. These items can be found at fastenal. There is room for improvement in the tubes, I admit. Option 3 is great if you want to go all out.

It will have the highest resale value based on the brand name components. Complete 5f1 Amplifer Pricing as of Februarywith all shipping included:. Building a kit is also a great way to boost your understanding of electronic theory and tube amplification. I recommend Mojotone.

If you are tight on cash consider building the chassis only and playing through an extension cab if you don't have an extension cab consider borrowing one. You can always buy a speaker and buy or build a cabinet after you successfully get it up and running. There's no better guitar amp to start with than the Fender 5F1 Champ. It has only 26 components but sounds fantastic. It is a single-ended amp with one power tube.

Keep this in mind when choosing your first build, anyone can piece together a complex amp. The problem is as complexity increases the more likely you are to make an assembly mistake and troubleshooting a complex amp can be extremely difficult for a beginner. That's why I recommend the simple 5F1 Champ. The Power Transformer and Output Transformer are attached to the other side of the chassis.

Another option for someone that has some electronic experience is the wonderful Fender 5E3 Deluxe amplifier. It has two power tubes in a push-pull configuration and is loud enough for many gigs. I went from being a lousy solderer and having a casual knowledge of electronics I couldn't even calculate the value of 3 parallel resistors and having no idea how tubes worked to really understanding electronic amplification and tube theory and my soldering skills are now top notch after building an amp or two.

Researching that first build motivated my learning and I have really enjoyed the entire process--and then of course there's the end result--having a nice self-built tube guitar amplifier to play through. Opening a tube amp kit and seeing all those little parts can be overwhelming so I recommend you do an inventory of the big parts like transformers, chassis, switches, tube sockets, etc.

Getting all those little resistors and caps in place on the board will make your amp project seem much more manageable and it will help you identify missing components or circuit board layout problems. It sucks to come close to completing an amp and then realize you're short a capacitor and have to wait for delivery. I also recommend you study factory built examples of the amp you plan to build so you know what your amp should look like.

If you select the 15 watt option, your kit will come with a larger single ended power transformer that allows you to use either a 6L6 power tube for 15 watts or still use a 6V6 power tube for the traditional 5 watts without having to rebias anything You must select which tube set you want to ship with your kit. You can upgrade the power tube from the 6V6 to a 6L6.

Update May I added a third power filter node to eliminate excessive hum just like the Deluxe Micro. Update Jan Here's an excellent demo video of the Champ Micro and the varying tones available:.

The full size Champ puts out 5 watts of power and as many people have figured out, that's too much for apartment dwellers or basement practitioners. The Champ Micro features two stages of gain and a dual triode parallel single-ended 12AU7 power tube from the proven Deluxe Micro.

Dan used an EZ81 for tube rectification large tube at far left. David's Champ Micro uses solid state rectification 4 diodes at left end of blue circuit board so only two tubes were required. I'm a big fan of the 's Fender tweed amps and the 5F1 Champ is a simple but great sounding tube amp so I decided to design a Micro version of the Champ. I used an almost exact copy of the Champ's Hi preamp channel and paired it with the Deluxe Micro's 12AU7 based parallel twin triode single-ended power amp.

The optional Negative Feedback Switch allows you to disconnect the feedback loop and get a grittier, more 5E3 Deluxe type tone with earlier breakup, or turn on the feedback for the standard Champ tone. I went with a 10k feedback resistor after tuning by ear.

The EZ81 rectifier tube uses a standard 9-pin socket and 6. The layout diagram also shows an optional 4 diode rectifier that would replace the tube rectifier.

Tweed Amp Kits

My recommended power transformer is the Hammond AX V. The 12AY7 and 12AU7 use 0. If you use an EZ81 rectifier tube it uses about 1 amp of heater current so any power transformer that supplies 2 amps of 6. A simple four diode rectifier can be used in place of the EZ81 rectifier tube to simplify construction and since the Champ Micro is a Class A amp it won't generate voltage sag using a tube rectifier so there should be no tone difference between tube and solid state rectification.

If you use a power transformer without a HT high voltage center tap you will need to use a four diode bridge rectifier instead of the diode rectifier shown in the schematics and layout diagrams below. The Speaker Jack has a 10 ohm 2 watt Headphone Resistor across it to load the output transformer with an 8 ohm load when headphones from 32 to ohms of impedance are used.

Be careful with the volume control when using headphones. Make sure it is at minimum volume when the amp is powered up and turn the volume knob slowly to keep from blowing out your headphones and ears. The Headphone Resistor gives the additional benefit of loading the output transformer with a 10 ohm load to prevent damage if you forget to plug in a speaker.

If you don't want the headphone jack simply delete the jack and replace the 10 ohm headphone resistor with a jumper wire. Red variac controls just the HT AC voltage to the amp.

Separate 6. I play them all through a Weber 12AA 12" Alnico speaker in an open back extension cab behind tablea 15" JBL E with hemp cone in the 5E3P cab and an Eminence H hemp coned 6" speaker in a small enclosure on top of the Deluxe. I added a Master Volume to the power amp because it's needed to control how hard the little 12AU7 power tube is driven.

The Master Volume also does a good job of controlling the output for true bedroom amp volume levels. The Master Volume is also very helpful when pedals are used with the amp because you can keep from overwhelming the little power tube when using high output FX. At max Master Volume setting the Master Volume has no impact on the circuit--it's as if the Master Volume is not there.

You need to play with the Master Volume to get the most out of this amp and to control the balance of preamp and power tube distortion.

The Volume pot controls the preamp tube and the Master Volume controls the power tube.
